Vladimir Lenin 30th December 1922 – 21st January 1924
Leader of the Bolshevik Party during the Russian Revolution, Lenin became leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from the time of its creation in 1922 to his death in 1924.
Joseph Stalin 21st January 1924 – 5th March 1953
Stalin ruled with Kamenev and Zinoviev until April 1925, then ruled alone and became dictator in the 1930s.
He fought with the allies during the Second World War but in the immediate aftermath took over eastern Europe to form the Communist Bloc beginning the Cold War. He remained in office until his death in 1953.

Took over as leader following the death of Stalin but faced fierce opposition from Nikita Khrushchev and was forced to resign.
